How to Build Claude Design Animations With Claude Opus 5

Claude Opus 5 is now the model to reach for when you're building a Claude Design animation you actually plan to export. Anthropic released it on July 24, 2026, and its pitch is simple: near the frontier intelligence of Claude Fable 5, at half the price and Opus speed. For animation work, that shifts the old advice. You no longer have to jump to the most expensive model to land complex, choreographed timing. This piece is the workflow, from build to exported video, and where Opus 5 changes the model you'd have picked a month ago.

What Is Claude Opus 5, and Why Does It Matter for Claude Design?

Claude Opus 5 is Anthropic's new flagship Opus model, launched July 24, 2026 as the default model on Claude Max and the strongest model on Claude Pro. Anthropic describes it as coming "close to the frontier intelligence of Claude Fable 5 at half the price." It costs $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens, unchanged from Opus 4.8 and half of Fable 5's $10 and $50 rates.

That matters for Claude Design because the thing that used to force you onto a premium model was complex choreography. "Stagger five cards in on scroll, delay the second row, fade the background, loop the last two seconds cleanly" is a multi-step brief that a weaker model gets wrong two or three times before it lands. Opus 5 was built for exactly that kind of layered, multi-step reasoning, and it now delivers it without Fable 5's price tag. Fewer regenerations to land the animation means a cleaner final build to hand to your export step.

How Much Better Is Opus 5 for This Kind of Work?

Opus 5 measures close to Fable 5 on the benchmarks that map to complex build work, at a fraction of the cost. On CursorBench 3.2 at max effort it lands within 0.5% of Fable 5's peak score, at half the cost per task. On OSWorld 2.0, a computer-use benchmark, it beats Fable 5's best result at just over a third of the cost. On ARC-AGI 3, which tests solving genuinely novel problems, Anthropic reports its score is three times the next-best model.

Translated to Claude Design: the reasoning that plans a synced, multi-scene sequence and catches its own timing mistakes is now available at the Opus price point. The practical read is that Opus 5 becomes the sensible default for anything harder than a one-line tweak, and Fable 5 drops back to a specialist you reach for rarely. It's the fourth Claude 5 model in under two months, and the first that makes the "only use the expensive model when it's really hard" rule mostly unnecessary.

Can You Select Claude Opus 5 Inside Claude Design?

No. Claude Design's canvas has no model picker, and Anthropic hasn't said it will get one. Opus 5's launch lists its availability as Claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and the Claude API (as claude-opus-5). Claude Design isn't named, and there's no model dropdown in the Design UI. Claude Design has always run on whatever model Anthropic wires up behind the tool, not a model you choose from a menu inside it.

How to Build a Claude Design Animation With Opus 5 via Claude Code

This uses the bidirectional Claude Code integration Anthropic shipped in June's Claude Design update: a connected MCP server plus the /design-sync command. Five steps:

  1. Connect the Claude Design MCP server, once. From Claude Code, run claude mcp add --scope user --transport http claude-design https://api.anthropic.com/v1/design/mcp, then /design-login to authenticate. After that it's available in every session.
  2. Switch to Opus 5. Run /model and select Claude Opus 5. It's the default on Max and available on Pro, so most plans already have it.
  3. Pull in your design system, if you have one. /design-sync imports your local codebase's components and tokens into Claude Design, so Opus 5 builds against your actual brand instead of the generic default look.
  4. Describe the animation, and pick your effort. Opus 5 runs with variable effort settings, thinking on by default. For a real multi-part animation, leave effort at high; raise it to xhigh for a choreographed multi-scene sequence with synced timing.   5. Review and hand off. When the result looks right, it hands off to Claude Code with no rebuild step, the same as any other Claude Design project under the June workflow.

The output is still what Claude Design always produces: live React code running in a browser, reachable through a share link. Opus 5 changes how few turns it takes to get that output right. It doesn't change the output format.

Is Opus 5 Worth It Over Sonnet 5 for a Claude Design Project?

For a one-line change, no. Swapping a color or a duration doesn't need Opus 5's reasoning, and the June canvas editor handles small tweaks for free with no model call at all. Sonnet 5 remains the right default for precise, describable builds like a looping gradient or a countdown.

Where Opus 5 earns its cost is the multi-step build you'd otherwise regenerate five or six times to get the sequencing right. How Do You Turn the Result Into an MP4?

Nothing about a newer model changes the export gap. Claude Design, regardless of which model built it, still has no native "save as video" button. You get a share link and a browser-rendered animation, not a file. Its native export options are Canva, PDF, PPTX, and standalone HTML, none of which is a video.
